Dead birds on the ground are never a good sign. If they’re dead before they hit the ground, it’s probably worse. Police and wildlife official in Spring Hill, Tennessee, are trying to figure how a road there ended up covered with dead birds – some apparently split in half before smashing into the asphalt.

Up to 100 dead birds were found by local Spring Hill residents on the afternoon of February 28 on Northfield Lane in Maury County. The police were called and were followed by officials from the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency who picked up some of the dead birds and took them back to the lab. The officials noted that some of the birds were “split open” and “they have never seen

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) When you go to the beach you don’t expect to find hundreds of dead fish covering the shore.

Pat Hawkins was heading out to the beach Tuesday morning to enjoy the weather, but when she saw the sea of dead Menhaden fish she was in shock.

Pawleys Island isn’t the first place this week to see the dead Menhaden fish on their shores. DeBordieu Beach had the same issue the day before, according to Chief Michael Fanning of the Pawleys Island Police Department.
Events like this happen from time to time, last year an influx of Star Fish were found on the same beaches, Fanning said.
It may be confusing to the people who live nearby, but Fanning says the state is looking into what may have killed the fish.

DEAD and bloated catfish are washing up on the banks of the Brisbane River in their thousands, leaving scientists searching for an explanation.

The department of heritage and environment are investigating the death of hundreds of fish in the Brisbane River at Lowood.

DEAD and bloated catfish are washing up on the banks of the Brisbane River in their thousands, leaving scientists searching for an explanation.

SeqWater officers were seen scouring the banks of the river just outside the centre of Lowood yesterday, where scaly bodies were scattered along rocky sections of the bank or bobbing belly-up in the steady current.

It is believed hundreds of fish were found dead last week and more were counted yesterday – totalling in the thousands.

The dead fish were found as far upstream as the Lockyer Creek.

Only catfish seem to have been affected, leading to speculation that a virus may be sweeping through fish populations in the river.

Department of Environment and Heritage Protection executive director Andrew Connor said there would be no explanation for the fish Read more…

It’s that time of year again, that time being whenever it is that unexplained mass animal deaths occur.

Wildlife experts were at a loss in early 2011 to explain the mass bird and fish deaths that seemed to occur with alarming regularity, prompting religious fanatics to proclaim the end of days were upon us. Since that time, many of these phenomena have been explained as effects of bad weather or a reaction to a New Year’s Eve fireworks.

Workers with Game and Fish and ADEQ head out on the Arkansas River to try and determine the reason for Tuesday’s fish kill.
Little Rock -It’s not the 83,000 fish that were found dead back in December, but another fish kill is being looked at along the Arkansas River.

This time the kill is much closer to the capitol city. In fact, the dead fish are being spotted along a newly opened pedestrian bridge.

Investigators with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission worked Tuesday afternoon  to estimate the size of this latest fish kill.

They…along with the Department of Environmental Quality…are also looking for a cause.

Two weeks ago, I told you about the death of millions of tons of fish in the river Min in China. A fish die-off that began on August 31 between the city of Huangton and Shuikou, culminating in early September along the Min River, where waves of dead fish turned up dead over hundreds of fish farms. Today, environmental watchdog groups began an investigation into a new case, after hundreds of dead fish were found floating in another local river.

A photograph, believed to have been uploaded online yesterday afternoon by a witness, showed the bodies of many small fish in Pujiang Town of Minhang District. This raised concerns of Read more…

A SIGNIFICANT fish-kill was discovered in the River Bandon in Cork after a member of the public alerted staff of Inland Fisheries Ireland.

More than 350 salmon and trout were found dead over a one-mile stretch of the river. The fish kill included salmon of up to 2.7kg (6lb). Many of the fish were decomposing.

An extensive search revealed no source of pollution and it was concluded that the event that caused the kill had passed by the time investigations began.

Head of fishery operations Dr Greg Forde, said: “During the summer, rivers are particularly vulnerable and factories and farmers Read more…

Dead fish mystery at Murray lake

THOUSANDS of dead fish have washed up along 8km of Lake Alexandrina’s shore in South Australia.

With the health of the Murray River and Lower Lake system at its best in years, the mass “fish kill” is a mystery, The Adelaide Advertiser reports.

Point Sturt resident Dot Ratcliffe said she was alarmed to find the problem when she went kayaking on the lake yesterday morning. “I saw them (extending) about 400m out in to the lake,” she said.

“It’s terribly upsetting, very distressing. There are thousands of fish washed up, something you do not want to see. I have been living here for 10 years and never seen anything like this.”

Bio-security aquatic pest manager Vic Neverauskas said Primary Industries would investigate the circumstances of the fish deaths as soon as possible. Most of the fish appear to be bony bream.

“There was a “fish kill” in Milang two weeks ago associated with cold nights,” he said.

“It is a natural phenomenon for bony bream. It’s normal for this to happen in July and August. Until we can get someone on the ground to verify the species, which will be as soon as practical, we are unable to make further comment.”

Ms Ratcliffe said friends told her they had walked from their yacht to the shoreline and were “literally walking on dead fish on the sand”.

“The smell is terrible. It’s a tragedy,” she said.

Lower Lakes fisherman Henry Jones said it might be a natural occurrence that kills mainly bony bream after a long flood. “There is a fungus that grows in their gills and around the body,” he said.
